.The Real La Manga Club and Serena Golf courses will host 423 golfers between June 26th and 28th. In the tournament's 77-year history, some of the most illustrious names in Spanish golf have been among its participants.

The calendar reaches one of the dates circled in red since the beginning of the year. It's not the Masters, it's not the Solheim Cup, it's not the Ryder Cup, and it's not even the Spanish Open; it's much more than that, at least for 423 boys and girls. We're talking about the Spanish Junior, Under-12, and Under-10 Championships, the grand celebration of golf that, in its 78th edition, returns to Murcia, the usual venue for these six events.

The Real La Manga Club and Serena Golf courses (which hosts the Boys' Junior competition) are the venues for the six events that make up this tournament, now in its second year, being held under the name "Juan Antonio Andreu Memorial." The best junior golfers in Spain gather in Murcia for three days of play, promising excitement, laughter, camaraderie, hugs, and perhaps a few tears—which are always present. These three days are the reward for a season of intense learning.

Illustrious surnames among children

The older children will compete in two events with 90 participants each. The boys will gather at Serena Golf for a tournament that looks more open than ever; this is because Oliver de Wint and Martín Cervera will no longer be competing like 'pros' for the title, as they have in the last two editions, but… there will be some very promising players: Gracialiano Ballesteros, Pedro Tineo, Manuel Cano, Sergio Vargas,…

As for the girls, it's the perfect time to follow the progress of golfers who have already shown their quality in the tournament, such as Cornelia Bermudo, Txell Alos or Sofía Gamilla, two-time Spanish champion and defending champion.

Talent abounds among the youngsters

In the Under-12 category, another 90 boys and 51 girls are participating in two exciting events. Among them are Dmitrii Elchaninov, the top-ranked Under-10 in 2024, Felipe Seferian from Madrid, the Spanish champion that year, Martín Gancedo, and another De Wint, Jaime, who shows great promise, just like his brother. As for the girls' competition, it's the perfect opportunity to continue watching the development of Ana Iturmendi from Catalonia, winner among the Under-10s a couple of years ago, as well as Candela Visus, Valeria Armas, and others. Talent abounds.

No one's more excited than the youngest kids.

The Benjamin category, on the other hand, is smaller in number (102 golfers in total), but it's usually more enthusiastic. And more capable of surprising. Every year, new children are discovered with a touch on the ball and a naturalness on the course that captivates. Gonzalo Bernal, Aitana Puerta, Ana Gross, Mauro Boluda, Juan Aparicio… Names that will surely remain in our memories for a long time.

A story that dates back to 1947

It's worth remembering that the Spanish Junior Championship began in 1947 at the Neguri Golf Club. The boys' competition has been held every year except for 1964, while the girls' competition hasn't been as continuous (it wasn't played in 1950, 1956, 1964, 1965, and 1966).

Among the boys, those who were able to repeat the title were Iñigo Arana (1947 and 1949), Luis Álvarez de Bohorques (1953 and 1954), José Luis Noguer (1962 and 1963), Eduardo de la Riva Jr (1966 and 1967), José María Olazábal (1979 and 1980), Félix Ortiz (1981 and 1982), Carlos Beautell (1985 and 1986), Carlos de Corral (1994 and 1995), Saúl Menéndez (2003 and 2004) and José Luis Ballester (2016 and 2017).

Interestingly, in the women's category, María del Carmen Navarro managed to win four consecutive titles (between 1982 and 1985) during a time when there was no Spanish Junior Championship (for 11- and 12-year-olds) and Navarro, who was under the age limit, competed in the older category. Noelia Navarro, for her part, won three consecutive titles between 1992 and 1994, while Carlota Ciganda from Navarre, Harang Lee from Cantabria, and Odette Font from the Balearic Islands each added two consecutive titles to their record in 2003-2004, 2008-2009, and 2016-2017, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Spanish Junior and Under-10 Championships have been held continuously since 1991 and 1993, respectively. Among the Under-12s, Carlota Ciganda from Navarre (2001 and 2002) and Rocío Sánchez from Malaga (2004 and 2005) have won the title twice, while in the Under-10 category, Manuel de Juan (1996 and 1997) and Saúl Menéndez (1999 and 2000) are the only ones to have won twice since the first edition in 1991.
