The 2026 Spanish Men's Absolute Championship, the Gonzaga Escauriaza Cup, is being held this week – from June 4th to 7th – at the Real Club Sevilla Golf. The tournament is hosting 120 golfers, with Nicolás Vidal, the in-form golfer of the first half of the season, leading the pack.
The Canary Islander (exact handicap +4) arrives at the prestigious Seville course after his thrilling victory in the recent Puerta de Hierro National Cup, where he was made difficult by another rising young talent, Mateo Hidalgo (+1.4) from Madrid, who is also a contender this week.
The spotlight is on both of them, of course, but also on the defending champion, Madrid native Álvaro Pastor (+5.6), who has just arrived after a good year of golf at Tarleton State. He is accompanied by other golfers who are also developing their academic and athletic careers in the United States:
Raúl Gómez (+4.7), Jorge Sánchez (+4.1), Iván Enguita (+3.2),…
The Andalusians Yago Horno (+5.3), Gonzalo Baños (+3.3) and Samuel Love (+3.1), the Valencians Fernando Cobo (+4.2) and Juan Miró (+2.4), the Aragonese Iván Enguita (+3.2) or the Basque Markel Olasagasti (+2.2), a pleasant surprise in the 2026 edition of the Copa del Rey, are other names to follow in one of the big weeks of the year.
And if that weren't enough incentives, in Seville there are golfers still under 16 years of age who have shown that they are ready to rub shoulders with the older ones: the Valencian Ignacio Iglesias (+0.7) - current Spanish Under 18 champion - and the Andalusians Oliver de Wint (+2.8) and Martín Cervera (+1.7).
The competition, which counts towards the World Ranking and the 2025 National Under-18 Boys Ranking, is played over 72 holes of Stroke Play Scratch on four consecutive days, with 18 holes played each day. After the third round, a cut will be made, with the top 60 players and those tied for 60th advancing.
