The Ryder Cup remains in European hands. Despite a furious comeback by the United States in the singles matches at Bethpage State Park (Long Island, New York), Europe secured a hard-fought 15-13 victory, sealed by a Shane Lowry putt to level his match against Russell Henley. Jon Rahm, whose performance dipped as the game progressed, was unable to add to his tally in his singles match.
Europe started the day with a comfortable lead (11.5-4.5) and the bad news of Viktor Hovland's injury, which forced the cancellation of his match against Harris English. The United States had no choice but to fight for every single point, and their strategy worked well from the start.
Cameron Young, Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler—in a top-level match against Rory McIlroy—JJ Spaun… the points kept falling for the home side; as did Xander Schauffele's, who convincingly defeated Jon Rahm (4/3). However, Ludvig Åberg's point put the European victory within reach. Matt Fitzpatrick, with half a point, and finally Shane Lowry, leveling his match on the 18th hole, allowed Luke Donald's team to reach the coveted 14 points. From then on, the rest was irrelevant.
With this victory, Europe now has sixteen wins compared to the Americans' twenty-seven. An interesting fact: in the last four editions, three have gone to European teams.
Europe, dominant from the first match
Europe's dominance in the first two days was such that they won all four rounds of play. The first day, Friday, ended with a clear 5.5-2.5 victory for the Europeans, who overcame the pressure of the Bethpage crowd thanks to an imperious performance from Jon Rahm. The Spaniard won both his matches alongside Tyrrell Hatton and Sepp Straka. With the Englishman, he won the opening foursome (4/3) against two heavyweights of the home team, Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas, in a match where they were only behind on the first hole. And with the Austrian, he defeated Scottie Scheffler – no small feat – and JJ Spaun (3/2) with superb play.
Rahm's key contribution was joined by his teammates, resulting in a 5.5-2.5 score that was already starting to put pressure on an American team that had the live support of even President Donald Trump.
On Saturday, the visitors' dominance intensified, resulting in an 11.5-4.5 scoreline that even the most optimistic fans couldn't have predicted. For Spain, Jon started the day with a win alongside his trusted partner Tyrrell Hatton against Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay (3/2) in a foursome where the Europeans were consistently dominant. That morning session concluded with a 3-1 run for Donald's team.
In the afternoon, Jon, playing with Sepp Straka, experienced the first disappointment of the week: he lost on the 18th hole to JJ Spaun and Xander Schauffele in a match that slipped away after the Americans won the last two holes. This result offered the only glimmer of hope for the local crowd, who could only hope for a miracle that ultimately did not materialize.
