Ernesto Fernández de Gamboa, a prominent promoter of amateur men's golf from within the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, has died in Madrid at the age of 72, the same city where he was born on March 1, 1953.

Characterized by his passion for the sport of golf, his friendliness and empathy, Ernesto Fernández de Gamboa was distinguished by the RFEG with the Silver Medal for Merit in Golf in 2021, a recognition of his intense dedication during the years employed from within this federative organization.

Ernesto Fernández de Gamboa initially held the position of Sports Director - the first such position in the history of this federative body - and head of Press before focusing on the sports area of the Men's Committee, an area that allowed him to facilitate and advise the career of almost all Spanish male golfers during the last three decades

Ernesto Fernández de Gamboa joined the RFEG on January 9, 1989 and retired in June 2021. In between, his outstanding work allowed him to see all the great figures of our golf grow, contributing to their sporting projection, with special mention for Jon Rahm as the spearhead of all those male golfers who have stood out over the last thirty years in our country.

Highly recognized throughout the European National Federations and golf organizations, his charisma, sense of humor, good conversation, humility and kindness have made Ernesto Fernández de Gamboa one of the most beloved people inside and outside the world of golf.

All members of the RFEG extend their deepest condolences to family and friends. May he rest in peace.
