The European Legends Cup by José María Olazábal, which is being held this week at the Real Nuevo Club de Golf de Basozábal, will have a strong Ryder Cup feel thanks to the presence in Euskadi of great protagonists from the history of golf and the present of the competition.
One of the most prominent names in Donostia – San Sebastián will be Stephen Gallacher, who will serve, once again, as captain of the Junior Ryder Cup, the tournament that takes place from September 23 to 25 and brings together the young promises of European and American golf, who are the great breeding ground for the Ryder Cup.
The Scotsman, a four-time DP World Tour winner, was one of the protagonists of the victorious European team that defeated the United States 16.5 to 11.5 at Gleneagles to retain the cup in 2014.
Now, he returns to the responsibility of guiding the younger generation after achieving a historic 20.5-9.5 victory over the United States at the 2023 Junior Ryder Cup in Rome. Knowing that repeating that victory in the United States is a challenge, he takes on that challenge with his team of 12 young players, including Spain's Nagore Martínez, considered one of the most promising young talents in Europe.
His role in Basozábal reinforces the connection between golf legends and the future of the sport, underscoring the value of the European Legends Cup as a platform of inspiration for new generations.
Host José María Olazábal, two-time Masters champion and living Ryder Cup legend, will be another major focus of attention. Olazábal, who has left an indelible mark as both a player and captain, will also travel to Rome in September as vice-captain of the European team for the 45th Ryder Cup, under captain Luke Donald.
In total, nine players with Ryder Cup experience will participate in Basozábal, making the European Legends Cup by José María Olazábal a unique event that unites the past, present and future of international golf.
In addition to the aforementioned José María Olazábal and Stephen Gallacher, the list of Ryder Cup players present in Euskadi for the first time to compete in an international tournament includes Briton Peter Baker (93), Spaniard Miguel Ángel Martín (97), Frenchman Jean Van de Velde (99), Swede Jarmo Sandelin (99), Welshman Philip Price (2002), Swede Niclas Fasth (2002), and Frenchman Thomas Levet (2004).
Donostia – San Sebastián will once again experience a few days of top-level golf, with historical figures, current role models and an eye on the new generations.
