Martín Cervera became the fourth Spanish winner of the Reid Trophy on Thursday, the nickname for the English Under-14 Boys' International. His victory at Fulford Golf Club, a veteran course in the north of the country, was secured thanks to a strong finish on the last four holes, allowing him to regain the lead.
The Sotogrande Golf Club player, leader after the first 36 holes, saw how the fierce competition from Englishmen Alfie Turner, Oliver Smith and AJ van Emmenis took him further from his goal after signing a double bogey on the 13th that seemed fatal, and turned the situation around with birdies on holes 16 and 18. Before that, he saved par on the 14th with a putt of more than four meters.
His round of 71 strokes (-1) has also allowed him to be the only player to beat the course; he finished with a total of -1 and two strokes ahead of the golfers mentioned above.
Olive de Wint, who started the day in second place, has dropped to ninth with a total of +4. It wasn't his day (75), as evidenced by his single birdie. Jorge de la Riva (+11), Rubén Sánchez (+18), Esteban Ledesma (+19), Graciliano Ballesteros (+22), Aitor Medina (+23), and Martín Fuertes (+25) were the other Spaniards who made the cut.
This triumph by Martín Cervera - let's remember, the current runner-up in the Spanish Children's Championship - is even more meritorious given the complicated weather conditions recorded in Fulford, with constant winds of 30-40 km/h that have complicated, and how, the boys' game.
The first day was already a triumph, almost flawless, for the Spanish delegation: Martín Cervera (-4) and Oliver de Wint (-2), the undisputed stars of the recent Spanish Junior Championship, took the top two spots. The thirteen birdies recorded between them promised plenty of excitement for the week ahead. The leaderboard tightened on the second day, although Cervera never relinquished his lead.
Spanish delegation expands
The group selected by the RFEG Youth Technical Committee has been made up of the Andalusians Oliver de Wint -sixth last year- and Martín Cervera, the Valencian Graciliano Ballesteros and the Galician Jorge de la Riva, with Antonio Gonzálbez as captain and Felipe Rodríguez as coach.
Meanwhile, Rubén Sánchez, Arturo Chillida, Martín Fuertes, Esteban and Marcos Ledesma, Hugo Carmona, Leonardo Oliver, Luis Fernando Hidalgo, Roberto Ruiz, Bruno Lázaro and Aitor Medina have competed in England.
Fourth title at the Reid Trophy
Only four Spanish golfers have won the Reid Trophy. Aside from Martín Cervera, the most recent was Juan Miró, who triumphed in 2023 by sinking a magnificent 10-meter putt on the second playoff hole against Englishman Sullivan Goddard. A year earlier, Arián Rodríguez took the victory, beating fellow Englishman Charlie Rusbridge by a single stroke at Lincoln Golf Club.
And before that, in 2011, Galician Íñigo López-Pizarro had done it, winning in a thrilling finish at Blackwell Golf Club. The Spaniard withstood the immense pressure from Englishman Matty Lamb, leaving him with no chance with a superb birdie on the 18th hole.
