Fifty-four golfers will enjoy the sixteenth edition of the Spanish Senior Men's Pitch & Putt Championship this weekend, July 5th and 6th, at the Aldeamayor course (Aldeamayor de San Martín, Valladolid). Galician golfer Marcos Gómez will be defending his title there.
The list of contenders includes other former winners, such as Rafael Santonja (2017 and 2018), Fernando Cabezudo (2022), and José López (2012). Juan Soler, Javier Niederleytner, and José Luis Billabona are other familiar faces who compete in Aldeamayor.
As has been the custom in recent years, the tournament is held in three rounds: the first two are played on Saturday and the third on Sunday morning.
Once again, Bodegas Habla is sponsoring the competition, awarding a valuable Magnum to players who achieve a hole-in-one on both days.
The creation of this Spanish Individual Senior Pitch & Putt Championship in 2009 by the Pitch & Putt Committee of the RFEG responded to the need to meet the growing demand for competitions in this specialty of golf, so popular among Spanish players in recent times.
A list of winners dominated by five golfers
Five golfers stand out at first glance at the competition's list of winners, which until 2022 included male and female categories: Pía Allende and Laura Batista, winners on three occasions, and Alejandro Muñoz, and Rafael Santonja and Juan Fernández-Ardavín, winners twice.
Focusing on the men's competition, the first winner, in 2009, was Alejandro Muñoz, who repeated his victory just one year later. Subsequent wins came from Juan Ortín, José López, Antonio Fernández, José Ángel Pérez, Francisco José Cisneros, Ángel Ríos, Rafael Santonja, Juan Fernández-Ardavín (both on two occasions), Fernando Cabezudo, Rafael Canomanuel, and Marcos Gómez.
