The four referees appointed to officiate at the 2025 Spanish Under-18 Men's Championship conducted a Rules of Golf workshop at the Panormámica golf course in Castellón, attended by forty-six young players. They learned about common topics such as relief without penalty and with penalty, and the importance of pace of play.
The golfers in attendance, guided by referees Vicente Olmos, José Carlos Martínez, Beatriz Cañadas and Miguel Agustín, have deepened their knowledge of the following Rules of Golf:
Rule 16 – Relief for abnormal field condition and embedded ball
Situations involving relief without penalty, available options, and the correct application of procedures were analyzed. It was emphasized that situations could exist where, despite interference, relief without penalty would not be granted due to the application of Rule 16.1a(3). Relief for embedded ball was also discussed.
Rule 17 – Penalty Areas
A detailed explanation was given of the relief options when the ball rests in one of these areas, and how the colored stakes (red and yellow) affect this was explained. It was emphasized that the stakes marking these areas are considered movable obstructions.
Rule 18 – Stroke and Distance Relief; Lost or Out of Bounds Ball, Provisional Ball
A review of the applicable penalties and relief procedure under Rule 18 was carried out. It was clarified when a ball is in or out of bounds.
Rule 19 – Unplayable Ball
An analysis was conducted of the three available options for relief with a one-stroke penalty and their correct application in different scenarios. The option of an unplayable ball in a bunker was included.
Game Rhythm
The importance of maintaining a suitable pace was emphasized, and strategies for avoiding delays and the role of umpires in controlling them were discussed. Time available to make a stroke and penalties for slow play were also addressed.
