The Spanish Mid Amateur Pitch & Putt Championship - formerly, Over 30 years old - has closed this year's edition with a vibrant and exciting third and final day that ended with César Fernández de Caleya being crowned the winner.
The Canary Islander, the best in the first round of the first day, relinquished the lead after the second round, but he hadn't yet had his final say. With José María Ortiz de Pinedo just one stroke ahead in the third and final round, César Fernández de Caleya gave it his all to reach first place and succeeded with a card of 52 strokes (-2).
However, José María Ortiz de Pinedo, also hardened in numerous battles, was not going to give up and with a result of 54 strokes, at par for the course, he tied for first place in the overall standings and forced the outcome of the tournament to an exciting playoff tiebreaker.
In this duel, the two best contenders of this Spanish Mid Amateur Pitch & Putt Championship, César Fernández de Caleya and José María Ortiz de Pinedo, would face each other, but the Canary Islander was not about to prolong the outcome too much and took the victory in the first round of the tiebreaker.
César Fernández de Caleya adds this important victory to those achieved in the Spanish Doubles Pitch & Putt Championship in 2011 and 2018.
With the first and second place in this championship decided, the third place on the podium was shared by three players: Rafael Santonja, Javier Pérez and Francisco Javier Carrere, all with a total of 156 strokes (-6).
José María Ortiz de Pinedo holds a slight advantage after the first day
The Spanish Mid Amateur Pitch & Putt Championship concluded its first day with the usual two rounds of 18 holes at the Benalmádena Golf course in Malaga.
In the first round, the most accurate player was César Fernández de Caleya, with a card of 49 strokes (-5), however, in the second round, the golfer from the Canary Islands could not repeat that record and saw how he lost the provisional first place to José María Ortiz de Pinedo, who finished with a great card of 47 strokes (-7).
With these numbers, José María Ortiz de Pinedo took the lead in the competition with a total of 100 strokes (-8), but with just one stroke less than his main pursuer, Francisco Javier Carrere, and two less than the aforementioned César Fernández de Caleya.
Let us remember that this tournament, which since adopting the name Mid Amateur welcomes golfers over 25 years of age, is played over 54 holes in two consecutive days - 36 the first, 18 the second - under the Stroke Play format, without a cut.
