Juan Postigo has the opportunity this weekend to continue making history in Spanish golf. The Cantabrian golfer will be at La Valmuza Golf (Salamanca) aiming for what would be his seventh Spanish Adapted Golf Championship title. How many golfers have been individual Spanish champions in the same category seven times? You could count them on one hand.

The Salamanca golf course welcomes fifty-four players this Saturday, who will compete across various categories. The Spanish Championship itself has twenty-three contenders; this time, six-time champion Antonio Llerena from Valencia is not participating, further clearing the path for Juan Postigo, currently competing on the G4D Tour.

The list of contenders to challenge the mountain man includes 'classics' such as Luis Mora, Álvaro Luengo, Fernando Vega de Seoane, Marc Oller or Andrés Pintado; former winners such as Francisco Centeno and Xavi Rubio, or newcomers such as the young Santiago Hernández and Patricia Roldán.

Two competitions, three trophies

Yes, titles, plural, because for the sixth edition there are three trophies to be awarded. Let's take a look. As every year, the tournament is divided into two simultaneous competitions: the Spanish Adapted Golf Championship itself and the Spanish Cup (played by nineteen golfers). The first is played using the Stroke Play format over 36 holes and is contested by players with a handicap up to 18.4 who hold a Medical Pass, while the second is reserved for golfers with a handicap of 18.5 or higher (also holding a Medical Pass) and is played using the Stableford system, also over 36 holes.

Simultaneously, the Federation Cup is being played. Created in 2019, it is for players with an exact handicap of 28 or lower who do not have a Medical Pass but can prove at least a 33% disability rating. Twelve players are vying for this title.

As in the previous thirteen editions, the event has been specifically sponsored by the RFEG Adapted Golf Committee to give more opportunities to access this sport to people with different disabilities.

From Xavi Rubio's triumph to the duel between Llerena and Postigo

This Spanish Championship has become a key event for Spanish Adapted Golf. It was inaugurated at the National Golf Center in 2010 with a victory for Xavi Rubio from Catalonia. In 2011, in Villaitana (Alicante), Francisco Centeno succeeded him, adding to the list of winners. Antonio Llerena (2012, 2013, 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2023) has six titles, and Juan Postigo (2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2022 and 2024) has also won six.
This Championship will be played in accordance with the Rules established by the EDGA (European Disabled Golf Association) and following the “Modifications to the Rules of Golf for Disabled Players” edited by the Rules Committee of the RFEG and approved by R&A Limited.
