The performance of Andalusian Yago Horno (-13 total) on the final day of the McGregor Trophy, England's Under 16 International Championship, will hardly be forgotten on the field of
West Essex Golf Club, north of London. He has become the second Spanish winner after posting rounds of 64 and 65 strokes in a single day.
This fantastic performance has allowed him to climb to a seven-stroke lead over Australian Ollie Marsh (-12), who can hardly understand how he didn't win the tournament. He didn't because early in the morning Yago Horno produced a round of 64 strokes (-7) with seven birdies and no bogeys, and then immediately followed it up with another almost identical round: 65 strokes (-6) with another six birdies and not a single mistake.
Such a sensational Thursday could only end in a title, ahead of Ollie Marsh and Denmark's Noah Lundskaer (-9). The other two Spaniards in contention for the win, fellow Andalusians Álvaro Trujillano (-7) and Samuel Love (-6), also made their mark in this marathon final round. Both finished in the Top 5.
Also making the cut, and therefore playing these last 36 holes, were Nicolás Vidal (+3), Éric Díaz (+5), José Antonio Salas (+11), Yago López (+11) and Luis del Rosal (+11).
At the same time, the Jean Case Memorial prize was awarded to the best-ranked player in the Under 15 category. Samuel Love finished second, three strokes behind Noah Lundskaer.
Extensive Spanish representation in London
Spanish golf has been represented from the first day by Yago Horno, Arián Rodríguez, Gonzalo Baños, Éric Díaz, Bruno Berge, Eladio Dano Pérez, Isaac Oliver, Íñigo Ferreira, José Antonio Salas, Juan Miró, Luis del Rosal, Nicolás Vidal, Pelayo Fernández, Samuel Love, and Álvaro Trujillano. Toni Planells has served as captain.
Spain had only one victory in this tournament, which began in 1982. That victory came in 2015, with Andalusian golfer Ignacio Puente taking the title at Wallasey Golf Club. The Sevillian golfer defeated Englishmen Toby Briggs and Charlie Strickland in a playoff.
