The 2023 Spanish Senior Men's Pitch & Putt Championship takes place this weekend, June 3rd and 4th, at the Juan Antonio Samaranch Sports Complex (Colmenar Viejo, Madrid), one of the most prestigious courses for this golf discipline in Spain. A total of sixty golfers are competing.
Among them are several former winners, such as José Ángel Pérez (2014), Rafael Santonja (2017 and 2018), and Juan Fernández-Ardavín (2016 and 2021). However, Fernando Cabezudo from Valladolid, last year's winner at the Elche Golf School, is not participating.
Juan Soler, Luis Montero, Rafael Canomanuel or Javier Niederleytner, golfers with extensive competitive experience also in this specialty of golf, are other names to keep an eye on this week.
The main novelty this year is that the women's competition is not being held at the same time as the men's.
The creation of this Spanish Individual Senior Pitch & Putt Championship in 2009 by the Pitch & Putt Committee of the RFEG responded to the need to meet the growing demand for competitions in this specialty of golf, so popular among Spanish players in recent times.
A list of winners dominated by five golfers
Five golfers stand out at first glance at the competition's list of winners, which until 2022 included male and female categories: Pía Allende and Laura Batista, winners on three occasions, and Alejandro Muñoz, and the aforementioned Rafael Santonja and Juan Fernández-Ardavín, winners twice.
Focusing on the men's competition, the first winner, in 2009, was Alejandro Muñoz, who repeated his victory just one year later. Subsequent wins came from Juan Ortín, José López, Antonio Fernández, José Ángel Pérez, Francisco José Cisneros, Ángel Ríos, Rafael Santonja, Juan Fernández-Ardavín (both on two occasions), and Fernando Cabezudo.
