On March 28, 2023, the R&A released a new video entitled 'Quick Guide to the Rules of Golf' to help novice golfers familiarize themselves with the basic rules.
The video covers sixteen key topics, including what to do before starting the round, how to understand the different areas of the course, and how to proceed when you can't play the ball as it is.
The 12-minute video covers the essential information a player needs to navigate a course and assumes the viewer has very little knowledge of the game or the Rules. The combination of video, diagrams, and verbal explanation is intended to make the Rules easier for players to understand on the course.
The Quick Guide video has been developed to provide easy-to-watch explanations of the most common situations players face on the field and to make the game more engaging and inclusive, showing that the basic rules are actually very simple.
The primary target audience for the Quick Guide is therefore the player transitioning from a novice to someone who wants to obtain a handicap and be able to compete, and thus needs to be able to play according to the Rules. However, it is hoped that this Quick Guide will also prove useful to all golfers in general.
This video, although in English, is available with Spanish subtitles and these subtitles can be accessed in the Web and App versions of the video.
The release of this Quick Start Guide video will further expand the resources available in the 2023 Rules of Golf App. The app offers even more visual aids, diagrams, and videos to explain the Rules and provides visual guidance in many common situations for the benefit of players of all experience levels.
