In this series, we've unearthed images from the RFEG's photographic archive, each one telling a beautiful golf story. The story of our golf. They are OUR CHAMPIONS.
📆 July 12, 2014.
⛳ Linna Golf Club (Finland).
▶Two Andalusians, Mario Galiano and Scott Fernández; two Catalans, Emilio Cuartero and Pep Anglés; a man from Soria, Daniel Berná; and a Basque, Jon Rahm, six friends, were the architects of one of the greatest feats of Spanish golf in recent years, the brilliant achievement of the 2014 European Men's Team Championship.
▶It happened at Linna Golf Club (Finland), where this sextet, captained by José Miguel Sagnier and with Yago Beamonte as coach, went with the ambition of emulating Alejandro Cañizares, Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño, Álvaro Quirós and company, winners in 2003.
▶Spain, second in the qualifying phase, defeated Ireland 5-2 in the final. The foursomes matches saw a draw, but in the singles, Jon Rahm and his teammates unleashed their full potential, definitively denying Paul Dunne and his partners the victory. The perfect storm, at the most opportune moment.
▶Before reaching the grand final, the compact and united Spanish sextet won an unforgettable quarter-final duel against France (4-3) and in the semi-finals against Scotland (5-2), who at no time could contain the succession of good shots from Galiano, Cuartero,… Because these six players, unleashed, were unbeatable.
▶It was an unforgettable week that placed these six boys on par with the great champions of 1997 (Sergio García, José Manuel Lara,…) and 2003 (the aforementioned Álvaro Quirós,…). In other words, they became OUR CHAMPIONS.
