In this series, we've unearthed images from the RFEG's photographic archive, each one telling a beautiful golf story. The story of our golf. They are OUR CHAMPIONS.
📆 June 17, 2006
⛳ Royal County Down of Newcastle (Northern Ireland)
▶2006 was no ordinary year in Belén Mozo's life. Not at all. That year, the Cádiz native won the British Girls, the European Individual Championship, and before that, one afternoon in June, the prestigious British Ladies Amateur at Royal County Down.
▶Her opponent in the final was none other than Swedish player Anna Nordqvist – who would later win two majors – whom she defeated 3-1 in a thrilling final. With this victory, Belén Mozo became the third Spanish woman to win this prestigious competition, following the successes of Marta Prieto from Seville in 2001 and Elisa Serramià from Barcelona in 2003.
Belén Mozo, a long-time LPGA player, defeated Canadian Meaghan Leblanc, Swede Py Bengtsson, Germans Thea Hoffmeister and Katharina Schallenberg, and Englishwoman Naomi Edwards. Meanwhile, Anna Nordqvist secured her place in the final by defeating María Hernández of Navarre on the 17th hole in the semifinals.
▶In addition to Belén Mozo and María Hernández, five other Spanish golfers participated in the British tournament: Azahara Muñoz—who finished the first phase in first place—Mariana Macías, Carolina Andrade, Isabel Álvarez, and a very young Carlota Ciganda. These leading figures in the recent history of Spanish women's golf did the country proud.
