Juan Soler from Malaga has won the fourth and final qualifying round for the 2019 National Pitch & Putt Ranking, which had an intense finish at the Lizaso Golf course in Navarre, with Fernando Cabezudo from Valladolid and Jaime Herrera from Cantabria tied with the winner.
These three golfers all finished with 159 strokes; Juan Soler carded 51 in the final round, while Fernando Cabezudo and Jaime Herrera each shot 54. Therefore, the rules had to be consulted, which stipulated that in the event of a tie, the player with the highest handicap would be declared the winner, and that player was Soler (3.2 compared to Cabezudo's 2.5 and Herrera's -1.1).
This victory adds to a list of achievements that Juan Soler boasts, among others, a great triumph in the 2018 Spanish Senior International and two others in separate National Ranking events in 2017. This season, his second place in the Italian International, held in June, is also noteworthy.
At the end of the first day, which consisted of two more 18-hole rounds, Fernando Cabezudo and Jaime Herrera were tied for the lead with 105 strokes. Juan Soler was three strokes behind.
Sixth event of the National Ranking
The 2019 National Pitch & Putt Ranking consists of six events: the Spanish Men's and Women's Championships and four National Ranking Tournaments. The Spanish Women's Championship was held at Colmenar Golf in March, with a victory for the young player from Castile and León, Cristina Carlón, while the Men's Championship took place in May at Las Palmeras Golf, with Carlos Vega emerging victorious.
The three National Ranking tournaments prior to this one at Lizaso Golf were held in Oyambre (March 30-31, with a victory for Raúl Toca), Sotoverde (April 27-38, with a victory for Fernando Cabezudo) and Riocabe (July 27-28, victory for José María Ortiz de Pinedo).
