The Austrian course of Föhrenwald Golf Club, south of Vienna, is hosting the third edition of the European Mid-Amateur Team Championship this week – from September 9th to 12th – for both men and women. The men are defending their title, while the women have a strong team aiming to win the tournament for the first time.

In the men's competition, Spain fields a quartet in which only one member remains from the 2025 winning team in Empordà (Girona): Nicolás Evangelio from La Rioja. No one remains from the 2024 winning team, which speaks volumes about the strength of Spanish mid-amateur golf. Many golfers have the talent to be on the team.

Evangelio, crucial to last year's victory, is joined by Miguel Díaz-Negrete from Asturias, José Talavera from Valencia, and Jon López Lanchares from the Basque Country, the current Spanish champion in the category. Pablo Bernárdez is the captain, with Luis Méndez, Director of the Men's Amateur Technical Committee, acting as the official.

Around twenty teams are competing in this event, in which Spain, naturally, is the team to beat. Their two victories in the two editions held so far, with Adrián Mata, Alberto Domínguez, and company participating, have placed them in that position.

Macarena Campomanes brings experience to a team that aspires to everything

Regarding the women's competition, participation has risen to thirteen teams, two more than in 2025. In this case, Spain presents a significant novelty: the inclusion in the team of a legend of national women's golf such as Macarena Campomanes, two-time world champion, the only Spanish winner of the British Senior Ladies Championship and number one in the world in the senior category, three-time European champion in that category and possessor of an unparalleled record.

Campomanes earned her place on the team through her own merits; for example, by being the runner-up in the Spanish Mid-Amateur Championship. In that same tournament, she was only surpassed by Irene Rollán from Gipuzkoa, who is also present at the tournament along with her fellow Gipuzkoan, Ane Urchegui, and Norena Lueje from Asturias. The captaincy is held by Sofía Marcos.

This team aspires to everything—remember, Urchegui has been a European champion in her category individually and a three-time Spanish champion—and that everything is to become European champions for the first time. Their rival to beat is the French team, winner of the two editions held to date.

Both competitions include a Stroke Play phase in which the four players on each team play 36 holes over two days. The three lowest scores at the end of each day count towards the standings. Only the top four teams at the end of this qualifying phase will advance to the knockout phase (Match Play) with a chance to win.
