Gonzalo Baños and Samuel Love contribute to continental Europe's victory in the Jacques Leglise Trophy

The Spanish team contributed 3 points to the victory against Great Britain & Ireland by 15.5 – 9.5

Continental Europe, with the contribution of three points from the Spaniards Gonzalo Baños and Samuel Love, has achieved its ninth victory in the last ten editions of the Jacques Leglise Trophy, a men's Under 18 tournament in which it faces a team made up of players from Great Britain and Ireland.

The event, which this time took place at The Island course in Ireland, just outside Dublin, ended with a score of 15.5 to 9.5 in favor of the continentals, who had already demonstrated their superiority on the first day, when they dominated by an illuminating 8 to 4.

Gonzalo Baños and Samuel Love added two points for their team in the initial round, firstly through two draws in the doubles matches alongside the Czech Louis Klein and the Italian Giampaolo Gagliardi, respectively.

Subsequently, the individual matches brought mixed results for the Spanish golfers, as Gonzalo Baños beat Adam Fahey by 1up and Samuel Love fell to Aidan Lawson by 4/3.

In total, the individual matches ended with five wins and three losses for the Continental Europe team, giving them a considerable advantage heading into the second and final day, which was confirmed in practice.

At this point in the competition, Gonzalo Baños, again with the Czech Louis Klein, won the foursome against Ben Sessions and George Whitehead by 2/1, while Samuel Love did not play the doubles matches by decision of his coach.

With a 10-6 run in favor of continental Europe, the final series of nine individual matches began, where Gonzalo Baños lost 3/2 to Charlie Rusbridge and Samuel Love lost 5/4 to George Whitehead.

Historical dominance of Great Britain & Ireland… but reaction from continental Europe

The Jacques Leglise Trophy has been held since 1958, and during that time Great Britain & Ireland's dominance has been evident, with 39 victories compared to 17 for the continental European team. However, the last nine continental victories (2016, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026) have all come in the last ten editions, marking a shift in the trend that has been confirmed this year as well.
