The Girls' Amateur Championship, one of the most prestigious events on the international amateur calendar and whose first edition dates back to 1919, has completed its first phase, played under the stroke play modality, with Carlota López as the main protagonist of the Spanish representation.
The Valencian player has finished this qualifying phase in an excellent second position with a total of 139 strokes (-3), just one stroke behind first place, held by the German Lena Geier.
Carlota López also delivered one of the most outstanding performances of the second day, carding a magnificent 66 (-5), the best round of the day. Her round was highlighted by a spectacular albatross on the 4th hole, a par 5 where the Real Club de Golf Manises player holed her second shot from the fairway with a 3-wood. To this score she added six birdies and four bogeys to complete a round that propelled her to second place.
Along with Carlota López, seven other Spanish women have managed to place themselves among the top 64 and thus obtain a ticket to the direct elimination phase for the title.
Marta Muñoz finished in fourteenth place, while Aroa González, Adriana García Terol, Blanca López-Balboa, and Carolina Pérez-Tasso shared twentieth. Amanda Revuelta, Carlota Marcos, and Luna Isabella Valencia also made the cut, all three tying for 54th place.
Thus, nine of the sixteen Spanish players who started the championship continue in the fight for the title and will now face the decisive match play phase.
The other side of the coin was represented by the seven remaining members of the Spanish team, who failed to achieve the first objective of the championship: to finish among the top 64 and qualify for the direct elimination rounds.
Carolina Pérez-Tasso and Blanca Gómez-Balboa paved the way forward
Carolina Pérez-Tasso from Catalonia and Blanca Gómez-Balboa from Madrid, with rounds of 70 and 71 strokes respectively, stood out as the most inspired Spanish players at the start of the competition, which produced quite high results in a good number of participants from the Spanish delegation, compromising their access to the elimination rounds for the title after the second day.
Carolina Pérez-Tasso managed to break par by one stroke, a feat achieved by only twelve players, highlighting the difficulties encountered in their first experience at Craigielaw. Meanwhile, Blanca Gómez-Balboa finished at even par, results that placed them in promising ninth and thirteenth positions, respectively.
Marta Muñoz and Carlota López, both with 73 strokes to occupy the provisional 28th place; Aroa González, Carlota Marcos and Luna Isabella Valencia, in their case all of them with 74 strokes in the forty-third place, started with good options to qualify for the elimination round in pursuit of the title, with the 64th place marked in fire.
The most accurate player of the first day was the German Cecilie Volckens, with a round of 66 strokes (5 under par).
Four Spanish women among the winners of the British Girls competition
The Girls' Amateur Championship boasts three Spanish winners in its record who have subsequently become professionals who have competed on the main continental circuits: María Beautell from the Canary Islands, winner in 1998; Azahara Muñoz from Malaga, winner in 2004; and Belén Mozo from Cadiz, winner in 2006.
The fourth and last Spanish winner was Alejandra Pasarín from Asturias, who won in 2014 at Massereene Golf Club (Northern Ireland) by beating German Chiara Mertens in the final (2/1).
In 2022 Cayetana Fernández was a finalist in Carnoustie, falling in the final duel against the Englishwoman Lottie Woad, the same outcome as in 2023, when Martina Navarro lost in the grand final with the German Helen Briem.
