Jorge Campillo, ranked twentieth, was the highest-ranked Spaniard in the Corales Puntacana Championship, a PGA Tour event held in the Dominican Republic, the only one taking place during the week of the British Open.
The golfer from Cáceres applied his well-known consistency for three days before shining brighter in the final round, a performance reflected in cards of 70, 69, 69 and 67 - the latter one of the best of the last day - to finish in the aforementioned 20th place.
The Spanish presence was strong in the early rounds, gradually diminishing as the tournament progressed. Iván Cantero, for example, even led the leaderboard at the end of the first round. The Asturian golfer posted an outstanding 65 (7 under par) that initially threatened to be a close call – he made two bogeys right at the start – before taking off completely, carding nine birdies from that point on.
Three subsequent rounds of 71, 73, and 71 caused him to slip to 48th place on the leaderboard, where Alejandro del Rey consolidated his position with rounds of 66, 68, and 71, which, after the second day, temporarily placed him in fifth. A final 75 penalized the Madrid native, who also finished in 48th place.
The goal of making the cut was initially set by Sebastián García and Rafael Cabrera-Bello, with almost parallel performances: rounds of 68, 70, 72 and 73 in the case of the Madrid native; 69, 70, 72 and 73 in the case of the Canary Islander. They finished in 69th and 77th place, respectively.
Additionally, brothers Nacho and Manuel Elvira - the latter having achieved a Top 10 finish last week in his first foray into the American circuit - were unable to overcome the elimination round after the second day.
